Has the magic of spending winter in Europe convinced you to book a trip in the future? If so, you may be wondering what to pack for your upcoming European holiday. As with most other areas in the Northern Hemisphere, winter in Europe tends to be on the cold side. However, having to stay warm doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice on style! Regardless of the length of your stay there are several items that are a must. Keep reading for my complete packing list for winter in Europe!
Typical Weather in Europe During Winter
Weather in Europe during winter varies quite a bit depending on where you travel to. If you head further north to Scandinavia then you’ll certainly experience freezing temperatures. However, many cities in the south of Spain, France and Italy have mild winters in comparison.
Northern Europe: If you plan on heading to Finland, Sweden or Norway then expect freezing temperatures. In Helsinki, for example, the average temperature in January is -5°C/ 23°F. Warm thermal clothing is a must in these areas!
Central Europe: European countries in Central Europe, like Germany, and the Czech Republic are also quite cold in the winter months and tend to get a decent amount of snow as well. The average temperature in these countries can range between 1-3°C/ 33-37°F.
Southern Europe: Certain cities in the Southern Europe benefit from micro climates. Alicante, for example, has mild winters of around 15/16°C. You will find similar temperatures in the south of Italy and France. Despite the high temperatures during the day it can usually get quite chilly in the evenings once the sun has gone down. Therefore, it is still important to pack warm sweaters and jackets.
What to Pack
Packing for a trip to Europe varies depending on several factors. Season, weather, length of stay and planned activities will all affect what you decide to bring with you. Whether you are spending a semester, (or year) abroad or backpacking through Europe there are basic items that should be on your packing list. A packing list for winter in Europe can seem overwhelming as most of the items are bulky and take up a lot of space. For those planning a short trip who don’t want to check a bag then my suggestion is to wear your bulkiest clothes on the plane and pack items that you can easily layer to keep you warm. Alternately, you can decide to bring the bare minimum and go shopping at your destination!
Your packing list will change depending on where you decide to travel to in Europe during winter. If planning a ski trip in the Swiss Alps then plenty of thermals and ski attire is a must. If sight seeing and exploring various cities are on your agenda, comfortable and warm walking shoes/boots are indispensable! Or if you want to head south to the islands and take advantage of the sea views and warmer weather then you will most likely pack lighter items to layer.
For those studying abroad in Europe, keep in mind that regardless of the semester there will still be several months of cold in most European cities. During the fall, expect colder weather in November and December. If spring semester seems more appealing, remember that the first two months are still winter. When I studied abroad for a year I managed to pack everything in just one checked bag and small carryon, as I knew that I would most likely shop while there!
