Are you planning a future trip to Morocco but are unsure of what to pack? You may be wondering if there are certain items of clothing than you should or shouldn’t wear, and what is appropriate during your trip. Morocco is a Muslim country; therefore the locals tend to dress moderately. As a result, packing can be slightly difficult, especially if you are a female. If you are unsure what to pack for your next Moroccan adventure, keep reading for my complete Morocco my packing list below!
Typical Weather in Morocco
Morocco is quite a large country with varying landscapes, terrains, and climates. Depending on when you travel, and which cities you decide to visit the weather conditions can vary. Therefore, your Morocco packing list will change depending on when and where you plan to visit.
Morocco tends to have sunny weather all year round but it varies greatly depending on the season and city. Contrary to common belief, the country does have four distinct seasons. The summer months are of course the hottest. The coastal cities enjoy slightly cooler summers whereas, most major cities will be quite hot. Marrakech for example sees average temperatures of 36° C/ 97° F in July and August. The Sahara will also be extremely hot during these months (40° C/ 104° F) and should be avoided during the days. The country’s desert climate also means that the days tend to be quite warm, yet the mornings and evenings are cooler.
Winter in Morocco also varies quite a bit. In the mountains, temperatures will drop significantly allowing even for snow in some areas. Meanwhile Marrakech and Casablanca have mild temperatures of around 18° C/ 64° F during the winter months. Spring and Autumn months are generally mild and pleasant throughout the country and great times to visit!
What to Pack
Packing for Morocco will depend on several factors, including length of stay, and planned activities. If you have a set itinerary or idea of what cities you wish to visit and any specific tours you wish to go on then this will make the packing process a bit easier. If you plan on visiting Marrakech and The Sahara you will need cool breathable clothing, whereas a trip to the mountains may require more layers.
One of the most difficult aspects of packing for Morocco is the fact that it is a Muslim country and the locals tend to dress modestly. As a tourist you are not required to follow the same dress code or guidelines and you will see visitors in shorts and tanks. However, I always try to respect the local culture and not draw extra attention to myself as a foreigner. I usually pack longer skirts, dresses, and trousers and try to avoid the short shorts. It is quite hot during the spring and summer months so I highly recommend packing items in breathable fabrics that will keep you cool during the day.
Scarves are a great accessory to have and should definitely be on your Morocco packing list! They are great to cover your shoulders and keep the sand out of your face if you plan to go to the desert. Layers are also important in Morocco. Even during the hottest days, the evenings can get quite cool because of the desert climate. Some coastal cities, like Tangier also tend to be cooler so I always make sure to carry a cardigan or jacket with me while traveling.
I’ve been to Morocco several times and there are a few basic items that I always include in my Morocco packing list. Depending on how long your trip is you can adjust the list and add or remove anything.
