A Complete Gran Canaria Travel Guide: Exploring the Canary Islands

Spain is home to so many incredible holiday destinations, including the famous Canary Islands. The archipelago consisting of seven very unique islands is actually located closer to Morocco than it is to Spain. Hence the year-round tropical weather! Gran Canaria is one of the larger islands with plenty of landmarks, varying landscapes, and beautiful beaches.

Gran Canaria is quite large and you can easily spend up to a week exploring everything. I’ve been twice now and have yet to see everything! If you’re planning a trip to the Canary Islands and aren’t sure where to start keep ready for my Gran Canaria travel guide.

WHEN TO GO:

The Canary Islands as a whole are known for their year-round mild weather. Even during the winter months temperatures rarely fall below 18 degrees C (64 F). With that said, you can plan a trip to Gran Canaria at any point during the year. However, if you’re looking to save money I would suggest traveling during the shoulder seasons (Oct-Nov and May).

I personally prefer to go in February, as it’s a nice escape from the Madrid winter and prices aren’t too high. However, it is a popular destination for like-minded Europeans in search of some mid-winter sun. Therefore, if you decide to go during this time period make sure to book your accommodation in advance!

WHERE TO STAY:

When visiting Gran Canaria you can decide to stay along the northern or southern coast. Factors such as the duration of your stay and what you’re looking to see will affect which area you choose to stay in.

The northern coast of Gran Canaria is home to Las Palmas (the capital). Those looking for more sightseeing, and culture may prefer the north. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a relaxing beach escape or plenty of nightlife the south may be a better option. Keep in mind that the weather tends to be a bit more unpredictable and rainy in the north!

Of course, if you have a rental car and can easily move around the island it doesn’t matter too much where you decide to stay. Since my friends and I didn’t have access to a car and were looking for more of a laid-back beach getaway, we chose to stay near Playa del Ingles along the southern coast.

HOW TO TRAVEL FROM THE AIRPORT:

Gran Canaria has one main airport with flights connecting to mainland Spain and other European countries. Getting to and from the airport is relatively straightforward regardless of where you choose to stay.

The local bus is the cheapest but also the slowest option. Several bus lines from Las Palmas and Maspalomas make stops at the airport. However, keep in mind that the hours can vary on the weekends and in the evenings so it’s important to always check the schedule.

Taxis in Gran Canaria are not too expensive in comparison to other European cities. If you’re traveling with a group and don’t want to deal with the hassle of the bus, then it will definitely be the fastest and more comfortable option.

For those that opt for the convenience of a rental car, you can choose to pick it up upon arrival at the airport.

THINGS TO DO:

Maspalomas Sand Dunes

Regardless of where you are staying on the island, the Maspalomas Sand Dunes along the southern coast are a must. Having been to the Sahara Desert I wasn’t expecting much from the dunes but they truly blew my mind. Imagine a small desert overlooking the Atlantic ocean with mountains in the background.

You can easily spend hours wandering through all the dunes. Just make sure to pack sunscreen and plenty of water as it can get quite hot! The Maspalomas Dunes are definitely one of the most popular attractions on Gran Canaria and even offer camel riding or dune buggy rides for those who want a bit more adventure.

Las Palmas

There’s plenty to do in the capital! Whether you chose to make Las Palmas your home base or not, the capital of Gran Canaria is certainly worth a visit. Spend your day lounging at Las Canteras Beach or stroll the old town of Vegueta.

If you’re in search of a bit of history and culture make a stop at Casa Colon. Tickets start at 2 euros and are available from 10:00 – 18:00. Or make your way to the Elder Museum of Science for a more interactive experience.

Puerto de Mogan

This picturesque seaside town is one of my favorite in Gran Canaria and possibly Spain! The fishing village is known for its colonial houses, vibrant bougainvillea, and multiple canals. Add in a quaint sandy beach, and a colorful marina and you’ve got the perfect place for a day trip.

I’ve been to Puerto de Mogan twice now and never get tired of it. Once there you can explore the small streets of the old marina, have lunch at one of the many seaside restaurants, or lay by the beach. If you have time, book a boat tour from the marina. They have several different options like snorkeling or sailing tours around the area.

Puerto de Mogan is located on the southern coast of Gran Canaria, meaning it has some of the best weather on the island. For those that opt to rent a car, Puerto de Mogan is about a 30-minute drive from Playa del Ingles. If not, the local buses have routes to the resort town from Playa del Ingles and Maspalomas.

Playa Amadores

Just a short drive from Puerto de Mogan you’ll come across Playa Amadores. The beach is famous for its crystalline waters and white sandy beach. It’s one of the most popular beaches on the island for a reason! The calm waters, sunbeds, and seaside restaurants attract visitors year-round. Playa Amadores is the perfect spot to spend the day relaxing and catching some rays of sunshine. Arrive early, however, to ensure you get a spot on the sand!

Playa Amadores is also home to several oceanfront hotels for those in search of a more relaxing holiday.

Playa del Ingles

I must confess that Playa del Ingles isn’t the most beautiful coastal city on the island, but it’s a great base if you wish to explore more of the south. It’s also perfect for those that don’t have a car as the local bus service connects you with nearby cities and the airport. The resort town is known for its nightlife, however. So you’ll find plenty of bars and restaurants for evenings out! For those traveling with a group of friends and looking to take full advantage of the island’s nightlife then Playa del Ingles is a great place to start!

Roque Nublo

Located un Nublo Rural Park, Roque Nublo is an iconic symbol of Gran Canaria. The volcanic rock is about 65 meters tall and sits over 1800 m above sea level. From the main parking area, you can easily hike up to the landmark. The route is around 3km and will take close to an hour. From the top, you’ll see amazing views of Gran Canaria and even catch glimpses of nearby Tenerife!

It’s definitely easier to reach Roque Nublo with a car but some guided tours of the island include a visit to this site.

Visit the other islands

Each Canary Island is unique and different from the next. Extend your stay and visit one of the neighboring islands, such as Tenerife, Lanzarote, or Fuerteventura. Depending on which island you choose, you can travel by ferry or take a short flight.
